how to get citizenship in Austria after 6 years

This is NOT about getting citizenship because of  marriage or asylum. Official name is: "on the basis of a legal entitlement" I got my citizenship in 2017, after 6 years residence in Austria. In Vienna.

First  step is to check general requirements: they are listed in English here: General conditions for naturalisation (oesterreich.gv.at)

📑minimum stay in Austria

Good news  for those who will apply for citizenship on the basis of a legal entitlement. Minimum 6 years! Yes! You read it correctly. Its written on the official website here: Granting of citizenship on the basis of a legal entitlement (oesterreich.gv.at) Extra screenshot for non-believers:

For students  its 6 years too, stop counting 2 for 1, its  when applying for different types of visas, not for citizenship.

📑 German Language level
B2 or
B1 is also acceptable if:
  • min 3 years of voluntary work with a non-profit organisation, or
  • min 3 years work in the educational, social or healthcare sector (like nurse), or
  • min 3 years of work in representing the interests of others (e.g. works council, parents’ representative)

📑 work requirements
you DON'T have to work all 6 years! You have to present your "best" 36 months within 6 years.
and the last 6 months will be checked additionally too. For example, if you studied 3 years, worked 2,5 years and lost your job few months before application, you still can apply. Magistrat will calculate the average salary and expences for the last 6 months. You even dont have to work full time. The most important your expences are covered and some money remains for normal living. I will show in calculations below.

📑"gesicherter Lebensunterhalt" calculations
This is the most important point. Many people ask "Whats the minimum salary to apply for  citizenship?" There is no minimum salary. You can rent a room for 400€ gross, or you can rent a big  apartment for 2000€. Magistrat calculates your income minus your expenses.

FORMULA

Your income (salary, kids money, rent income, etc)
- your expenses (rent, bank loans, internet, insurances, electricity, etc)
+ extra state deduction 327,91€
-----------------------------------------
1.110,26€ for 1 person (from 1.2023)

Examples:

If you rent a room for 400€, your salary should be: 1110,26 (required minimum) + 400 (rent) - 327,91 (state deduction) = 1182,35€ net /month. If you rent an apartment for 2000€, you need: 1110,26 (required minimum) + 2000 (rent) - 327,91 (state deduction) = 2782,35€ net /month

Of course I didnt consider other expenses like internet, heating, phone, insurances, etc. This is  just basic calculation fo find out if you have enough money to apply or not. Use my  calculations as a basis (02.2023), updated numbers you will find here: General conditions for the issue of residence permits (oesterreich.gv.at) Also minimum for couples, kids is mentioned etc.

📑 better married or single?
if you are married, you have to bring all your  documents AND of your partner. Its also double work for Magistrat. If your documents are ok, but something is missing by your partner, you will not get any confirmation until both sets are full and correct. You need records for you and your  partner for the last 6 years!

📑 what documents required

they are always individual for each applicant. In general: salary proof of  "best" last 36 months, incl last 6months, no criminal records, birth certificate, insurance, marriage/divorce certificate, KSV1780 (credit loans, debts), rent contracts or bank transaction proofs for the last 6 years, Meldezetteln also for the last 6 years, etc. Proof of living in Austria for 6 years.

📑 how to write CV for citizenship application

Dont bring your best edited CV as for looking for a job! No. They need details for each month of your 6 years in Austria. If you studied (even if not finished) so write: studied there from--- till---- (add a proof, like semester notes); worked at a company XX from----till---(add a proof, like salary slips). If you didnt work and  didnt study you should add this info too. If longer than 6 months Magistrat will ask you for the proof: it can be doctor visits in this period.

📑 TEST for citizenship

- not difficult, sometimes funny. And its a multiple choice, so no need to write anything, just mark a correct answer. Your will get all learning materials. They are not big. I took me 2 weeks to get ready and I passed with 95% correct answers. My german level was B2. I highly recommend to practice with these online tests:

Staatsbürgerschaftstest Wien - Einbürgerung.at (einbuergerung.at) OR Mein Österreich, Vorbereitung zur Staatsbürgerschaft - Online Übungstest durchführen (staatsbuergerschaft.gv.at). At my final test I had about  60% questions similar to those form online tests.

📑 how long it takes

If you are single (only1 set of docs) & fast with collecting documents and if you ask to pass the test faster, you can get the positive confirmation already within 3-4 months. In Vienna. Maybe outside Vienna its even faster. After getting positive confirmation you will/might need to leave your current  citizenship. After that it can take additional 2-3 months till they recheck your status (if you didnt  convict any crime within this period, etc).
